Cotton Township is an organized double township that includes Township 54 North-Range 17 West and Township 54 North-Range 16 West. Within Cotton Township's boundaries there are three communities: Cotton, Shaw and Whiteface. The Cotton community is totally contained within Cotton Township but the Shaw and Whiteface communities are only partially contained. The Shaw community covers roughly a third of 54-16 within Cotton Township and also extends outside of it into part of unorganized township 53-16 to the south. The Whiteface community covers about a quarter of upper 54-16 within Cotton Township and also extends outside of it to the east, into part of unorganized township 54-15 and part of unorganized township 55-15.
